Artist name: Michael & George
Featured Work 1: The HB Lamp
From Michael & George: “The HB Lamp is the debut product from Michael & George and the first in our ‘Stationery Objects’ range. A made to order design piece that aims to elicit a smile and illuminate your room.”
I think this is a design masterpiece. To see these designers take the functional and often awkward black cord and turn it into a drawn line soothes my spirit.
Featured Work 2: Geometry Clock
This lovely, innovative time piece relies on the aesthetics of a geometry tool set. Michael & George are also launching an HB Mini Desk Lamp in March, 2016 and are known to create beautiful illustrations (see below- on the right is an illustration of a Matisse quote).
5 Questions for the Artist/Designer:
1. What is design to you?
“To us, Design is something we love. It’s what brought us together and what inspires us every day. It’s creativity, it’s skill, it’s passion, it’s inspiring, it’s functional and non-functional, it’s polarizing, it crosses mediums and provides freedom to express ideas from anywhere and everywhere.”
2. What did you make in the past, and why?
“It all started in a graphic design/branding agency in Sydney (Michael a designer, George a client service/project manager). Workplace romance followed then we decided to move to London to pursue our design careers and do some traveling. We each had the opportunity to work in some great agencies and on some interesting projects across all kinds of mediums. We learned lots along the way from many very talented people, built on our skills, and became very inspired. After creating our very own DIY East London wedding (featured in the Rock My Wedding blog http://www.rockmywedding.co.uk/the-sound-of-bow-bells/) we decided to travel through South America for a 6 month mega honeymoon. During our trip we made a decision to pursue our aspirations to venture into 3D product design with our very own projects, starting with the Giant HB Lamp. London was the perfect place for us to give this a red hot go. So that’s what we did.”
3. What are you making now, and why?
“We are currently making the final prototype of the HB Mini Lamp. Bringing the HB Mini to market is our number one focus right now as we gear up to launching a Kickstarter campaign in March. We are trying to scale up to a larger production volume so that the HB Minis are more affordable (as the Giant HB Lamps are too much for many people to afford/too large to fit into peoples house/office – they are hand crafted and made to order to very expensive and time consuming to create). We’ve had a lot of interest in our HB Minis so we sincerely hope that people will support our Kickstarter campaign. The idea is that we will offer rewards for supporting us and pre-sell the lamps many at below RRP. The earlier people log on to the campaign to buy a lamp, the bigger discount they will receive. Fingers crossed our dream to make the desks of the world more creative in 2016 will come true!”
4. What are your hopes for the future?
“Michael and George hope to focus full time on the business Michael and George moving forward. Currently we work on other projects to bring in the bacon however creating a successful business doing what we love and creating unique products for the world that make people happy while also working together and having more family time is the ultimate dream.”
5. Do you want to add anything?
“Just an aside that we launched Michael and George in London in September 2014 just before our first baby (Frankie) was born in October 2014. We are happy to say we are having another baby boy (this time in our hometown of Sydney) in April and launching our HB Mini Lamp Kickstarter campaign in March – once again a month before the little one arrives – nothing like a hard deadline to motivate action. We are looking forward to spending more time working together and focusing on the business.”
