Bruno Big: “I Want to Preach Love”

On June 17 Bruno Big will join Marco Gallotta in sharing work at the “Primary Obverse” show at One Art Space Gallery. The Press Release for the show shares that in one of his projects with Nike, Big developed:

“the Neymar Jr. Collection ‘Ousadia and Alegria’ for Nike. Big painted a giant canvas of 1,000 shoeboxes to publicize the ‘Ousadia Alegria’ launch, delivering the first pair to Neymar Jr. personally. The Ousadia and Alegria collection, which includes training apparel and two Nike Sportswear footwear silhouettes are available at nike.com.”

The billowing lines of Bruno Big’s beautiful works draw us in as viewers and carry us along waves and curves through organic linear compositions, striking portraits, and magical scenes. His lyrical works seem to glide and flow, full of life, breath, and heart.

The “Primary Obverse” show, curated by Monica Watkins,  is giving partial proceeds to the Jesse Lewis Choose Love Foundation, a 501(c)(3) charitable organization with “a commitment to reach students, educators and individuals, nationally and internationally, and provide them with a simple yet profound formula for choosing love.”

5 Questions for the Artist:

1. What is art to you?

Our way to see and communicate with the world. I think that art is what distinguishes humans from all other beings in the world.

2. What did you make in the past, and why?

In the past I worked and tried many ways to gain exposure for my art. I worked in and made music, theater, cultural productions, and design. Trying out these different areas made me grow as human being.

3. What are you making now, and why?

I currently develop visual arts projects and my biggest passion is to create. I work independently and I am my own boss. I am able to develop commercial projects with large companies but what I love most to do is create and develop my art without compromise. And I do it to paint my canvases, make my graffiti, my etchings, ceramics, etc.

4. What are your hopes for the future?

I hope to reach and touch people with my art. To meet and exchange with old and new friends. To travel and absorb the culture of new places … Learn! I am very concerned about the world–we live in a time where hate speech is growing and I am totally against it. I want to preach love.

5. What else would you like to say?

It is a great honor to be part of the project Primary Obverse. Developed together with Marco and Monica, this project is a beautiful challenge. I think at the time we live in, it’s very important to honor people who make a difference in their existence. This can be in small gestures, in our everyday life, or at a world-wide level. The important thing is to applaud and expose the example of those who try to change and improve the world we live in.

Artist Supplied Background:

Bruno Carneiro Mosciaro – well known as Bruno Big – is a designer and visual artist with a degree in Visual Communication from PUC – Rio. Carioca, born in 1980, Big is a multidisciplinary artist who likes to explore and research different techniques. The ones he admires the most are the primitive ones, such as printmaking, pottery, stencil and woodcut. Bruno Big is able to move among various media and works a lot with contemporary techniques such as graffiti, digital illustration and experimental printmaking. He is always exchanging experience with his students from the workshops he ministers together with teacher and artist Thereza Miranda, at PUC’s Department of Art and Design (in RJ). He started teaching at the stencil workshop and currently teaches engraving workshops along with Theresa. In 2002, he opened his own graphic design studio and worked as partner, designer and art director… Big has developed set designs, customizations, panels, facades and stores paintings, illustrations, prints, advertising arts and much more. Many of these works were made for campaigns and brands such as Coca-Cola, Farm, Canal Brazil, RedBull, Rider and Nike… (check out his full bio. here to learn more about his many creative  projects and shows).

His most recent solo exhibition, called “Pulsa”, took place in Homegrown Gallery, Rio de Janeiro, in 2015. During this show, the artist exhibited his new pieces that were created using different shapes and bases, such as canvas paintings, engravings made with different techniques and, for the first time, his work in ceramics. All of them related to a single theme: relationships. Through his art, Bruno Big has a very strong presence on the streets. He likes the challenge and the response the street offers. The constant search for the next space to be painted, the way he has to adapt to different media and the interaction of people who are around as he creates his next piece, they all produce an energy that is vital to Big as an artist. His unique traits carry a very strong and remarkable identity. Bruno Big is always studying and researching. And he never gives up being among the many possible ways of art: the academic world, his work as a graphic designer and his free artistic expression.
